The Covenant has already deployed forces to the mesatop, including the unusual Professor Mesoza, who eagerly awaits a source of Radiance so she can study passages between worlds. The Wayfarers need to find a way up there quickly, before the Coven can capture the Living Sun's light.

* Several Escarpa fliers help the Wayfarers up to the mesatop.
* The Covenant forces atop Sunrest Mesa consist mostly of researchers, currently deploying all sorts of arcane equipment from their commandeered airship. One piece is a device based on Sparkwright's Rift-Mender, here meant to open a portal to the Living Sun's mystery dungeon. Another is a crate that contains an unknown object.
* The research group is led by a koraidon, who calls herself Professor Mesoza. She's a faller and doesn't remember her previous life, but is excited to learn how to travel to other worlds. She's friendly and open about being here to research the Living Sun's Radiance, but warns that she will defend their mission from any interference.
* Some of the Wayfarers chase Covenant operatives through the portal (see Sun's Rest Mystery Dungeon), while the rest remain to fight Mesoza and take out the researchers' equipment.
